How to make perfume last longer: 10 practical tips

You apply perfume in the morning and wonder at lunchtime where the scent has gone. Should you spray more, choose a different spot or look for another fragrance? Start with your routine. How you wear, assess and store a perfume is as useful to explore as the notes on its product page. These ten tips help you discover what feels right for you.

There is no fixed number of hours for which every perfume smells the same on everyone. Set a personal goal: do you want to notice the scent close to you during your working day, or would you prefer a more noticeable trail for an evening out? That distinction helps you make choices without continually adding sprays.

10 tips for a thoughtful perfume routine

1. Try unscented body care

A moisturising body lotion before your perfume can help you enjoy the scent for longer. When testing, choose an unscented version and let it absorb first. This avoids adding a second scent from your body care, allowing you to assess mainly the perfume. Keep the rest of your routine unchanged to compare the effect.

2. Apply to clean, dry skin

Make perfume a recognisable step after washing and drying, before you leave. Choose a time when you will not immediately wash the applied fragrance off again. Note roughly when you spray. You can then judge whether you want to reapply after two hours or only towards the end of the afternoon.

3. Choose a spot you will not wash immediately

The wrists or neck are common places to wear perfume. If you often wash your hands and wrists at work, you could choose your neck instead, if comfortable and consistent with the instructions. This avoids washing the applied fragrance off shortly afterwards. You do not need to spray every usual application spot at once.

4. Let the spray dry naturally

Leave perfume alone for a moment after spraying. You do not need to rub your wrists together to distribute it. This simple habit also gives you a clear testing sequence: apply, wait a moment and then smell. Avoid drawing a conclusion from that very first, freshly sprayed impression alone.

5. Spray directly and start modestly

Aim the atomiser at your chosen spot according to the packaging instructions, rather than making a large cloud and walking through it. This puts the spray where you want to wear it. Start modestly and assess the result before adding more; a compulsory number of sprays does not suit every preference or occasion.

6. Finish dressing once the perfume is dry

Give the applied spray time to dry before sliding a collar, scarf or bag strap over that spot. This is a practical way to avoid rubbing freshly applied perfume straight away. You could apply it before putting on your top layer, so this short pause fits naturally into your morning routine.

7. Check before spraying again

Wanting another spray does not tell you how much perfume the person beside you notices. You could ask someone you trust whether they can still detect it close up. Treat that answer as extra information and adjust the amount to the occasion, especially in a shared workspace or small car.

8. Plan a modest refresh

If you want to experience the scent again in the evening, plan a modest refresh instead of applying much more in the morning. First check what is still noticeable. Keep to the same scent during a test so that a second perfume does not cloud your impression of the first.

9. Store your bottle carefully

Keep perfume out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Close the bottle after use and choose somewhere such as a drawer or cupboard. Its original box is useful if the storage area is bright. A regular place also makes your bottle easier to find and helps you maintain your routine.

10. Compare fragrances on separate days

Test two candidates on separate days using roughly the same routine. Compare your notes about dosage, wearing times and the scent you still enjoy later. Choose on the basis of the whole experience. The strongest initial impression alone says little about which perfume you enjoy wearing for a full day.

Two fragrances to try

Try Vanilla Wood Perfume 100ml for vanilla with notes including cinnamon, cardamom, musk and woods, or Royal Musk Perfume 100ml for musk, jasmine, orange blossom, ylang-ylang and cashmere woods. Use these tips to compare your own wearing experience; a notes list promises no fixed number of hours.
